Understanding NDIS Funding for Neurodivergent Young People in Adelaide: A Parent's Guide

Neurodivergent youth group discussing their NDIS funding

If your child or young person has a NDIS plan, you may be wondering whether it can fund support work, mentoring or community participation.

The answer is often yes, but it depends on your child or young person's individual goals, support needs and the funding included in their NDIS plan.

Understanding NDIS funding can feel overwhelming at first. Between different funding categories, management options and plan reviews, it's easy to feel unsure about what your family can access.

This guide explains the basics to help Adelaide families better understand how NDIS funding may apply to neurodivergent children and young people.

Understanding How NDIS Funding Works

Every NDIS plan is unique.

Funding is based on an individual's circumstances, goals and the supports considered reasonable and necessary under the NDIS. This means two participants with similar diagnoses may have very different plans.

Rather than focusing on a diagnosis, the NDIS considers how a person's disability affects their everyday life and what supports will help them pursue their goals and participate in their community.

If you're ever unsure what your child's plan includes, your Plan Manager, Support Coordinator (if you have one) or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help explain it.

Types of NDIS Plan Management

Self-Managed

With self-management, you manage your participant's NDIS budget and pay providers directly.

This option offers the greatest flexibility and allows you to choose from both registered and many non-registered providers.

Plan-Managed

A Plan Manager looks after invoices and payments on your behalf while you continue choosing the providers you want to work with.

Many families appreciate having the flexibility of self-management without needing to manage the administration themselves.

Serenity Social & Support Services works with plan-managed participants.

NDIA-Managed (Agency Managed)

If your plan is managed by the NDIA, funding is paid directly to registered NDIS providers.

At this stage, Serenity does not provide services to NDIA-managed participants. If you're interested in accessing our supports, you may wish to discuss changing to plan management or self-management at your next plan reassessment.

What NDIS Funding May Be Used for

Depending on your child or young person's individual plan, support work may be funded under different Core Support categories.

These supports may include:

  • Building independence with everyday routines

  • Developing daily living skills

  • Social and community participation

  • Mentoring and capacity-building through everyday activities

  • Attending community groups, events and recreational activities

  • Developing confidence in community settings

  • Transport support where funding has been specifically included in the plan

The supports available will always depend on the wording of your child or young person's plan, their goals and the funding that has been approved.

What If You're Not Sure What Your Child or young person's Plan Covers?

You're not alone.

Many parents tell us they're unsure whether support work or mentoring can be claimed through their child's NDIS funding.

If you're uncertain, we recommend speaking with your:

  • Plan Manager

  • Support Coordinator (if applicable)

  • Local Area Coordinator (LAC)

You're also welcome to contact Serenity. While we can't determine what the NDIS will fund, we're happy to discuss the supports we provide and help you understand whether they may align with your child's plan.

Preparing for Your Child or young person's Next NDIS Plan Reassessment

If your child's current funding no longer reflects their support needs, you may be able to request a reassessment with the NDIS.

Helpful evidence may include:

  • Reports from your child's occupational therapist, psychologist, speech pathologist or other allied health professionals

  • Information from teachers or education providers where appropriate

  • Records of the supports your child currently receives

  • Notes about how additional support has helped your child participate in daily life, build independence or engage with their community

  • Supporting letters from providers involved in your child's care. Serenity can provide supporting documentation for families we work with when appropriate.

Keeping records throughout your child's plan period often makes future planning conversations much easier.
